Hesje Observatory at Miquelon Lake
Apr. 06, 2021 7:00 a.m.
The Hesje Observatory is located at the Augustana Miquelon Lake Research Station (AMLRS). Miquelon Provincial Park is a dark sky preserve, so it is an ideal place for an astronomical observatory, as there is minimal light pollution to hinder the excellent view of the night sky. The dream of having an astronomical observatory was made possible by Alumnus Brian Hesje. The telescope in the observatory provides a digital feed to the classroom in the AMLRS, and will eventually be able to be remotely accessible at Augustana and online. There is an observation deck around the dome where portable telescopes can be set up. The addition of the observatory will benefit Augustana students, professors, teachers, and anyone else who is interested in astronomy. The observatory is a center for opportunity, giving astronomy enthusiasts access to the high-tech instruments necessary to study beyond Earth and into the cosmos. |

Life in the Diplomatic Service
May 10, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Diplomat, development worker, farmer, entrepreneur In 2014, Richard was ready for a break from bureaucracy, and his wife was eager to pursue a long-held dream: to take over her family farm. While learning the ropes of a cow-calf operation, he has dabbled in teaching sociology and political science at Augustana, and decided in 2018 to open a bookstore and boardgame café with his brother-in-law in Camrose, called Fox & Fable, which he hopes will become an inclusive hub for the Camrose community. Our first social event/fundraiser of the new Rotary year is a Virtual Beer Tasting event.
A Taste of Camrose Brewing
July 8, 2021 7pm on ZOOM
This event will showcase our 2 local breweries, Norsemen Brewing and Battle River Brewing and our very own Camrose cidery, True North Cider. The tasting package will include 2 beers from each of the breweries and 2 ciders from the cidery. So, there is plenty for those who are not beer fans. That is the social part of the event.
The fundraising part will be a donation to The Rotary Foundation PolioPlus fund. The cost of a tasting package for 2 is $90, which includes a $50 donation to the Foundation (charitable receipt provided).
The tasting will involve not only drinking the beer, but also hearing from the brewers about how they brew their beers/ciders to get the desired flavours and perhaps a peek at what is coming out in the future. This is meant to be interactive, so feel free to share comments and questions as we sample. The evening will be hosted by Richard from Fox and Fable, who has been a fantastic partner in pulling this event together. He worked with the brewers and is assembling the tasting packages.
How do you register to take part? All you need to do is send Lou a simple email that you wish to purchase a tasting package, and etransfer $90 to rccpay@gmail.com. We will deliver the tasting packages to you on Wednesday, July 7. If you live out of town, we can make arrangements to connect and hand off your brew tasting package.
Is this only for Rotary members? I say, the more the merrier and also the more we can raise for the Foundation. Please share this invitation with friends and family, along with Lou’s email address for them to register (lou.henderson.rotary@gmail.
We are looking forward to an entertaining and educational evening learning more about Camrose craft beer and cider. Hope you will join in on the fun!
Cheers!
Lou Henderson
