100 Years of Rotary

Rotary is Celebrating 100 Years in Camrose

The Rotary Club of Camrose was chartered on March 24, 1924. In celebration of 100 years of Rotary in Camrose we will be hosting three events:

Online Auction, April 16 to 30
100th Anniversary Gala, April 27
Family Fun Day, June 15

Online Auction April 16 to 30

The online auction features a variety of items - experiences, merchandise, gift cards, and more. You also have the opportunity to donate to our causes:

Days for Girls Camrose Team creating and sending menstrual health kits to girls in need around the world. Almost 6,000 produced to date
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Camrose Affiliate serving 325 children under 5 in Camrose City and County with a new age-appropriate book every month
Rotary Youth Exchange giving high school youth a one-year immersive experience abroad while we host a student from abroad
Other projects addressing Rotary's Seven Areas of Focus, including Community Economic Development and Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution

Our Gala Celebration will be at the Days Inn Norsemen where will Honor Our Past | Celebrate Our Present | Build Our Future. From the special welcoming cocktail, enjoyable cocktail hour musical entertainment, delicious buffet dinner, live auction of six special experiences, timely keynote, and fellowship our goal is to entertain you and share the impact of Rotary in Camrose and around the world thanks to the support of our community and the passion of our members.

Family Fun Day June 15

Saturday, June 15 is a time for our community to enjoy a free, family oriented day of games, food, and fellowship at the Camrose Rotary Pavilion by the Stoney Creek Centre. Our butterfly and hummingbird gardens are close by while our Camrose Rotary Peace Path featuring trees planted to recognize Rotary Youth Exchange students going abroad (outbound) or being hosted by families here (inbound). The students spend close to a year in an immersive cultural experience usually hosted by three to four different families while attending school and being part of the local community.

More details about the Family Fun Day will come as we approach June.

The Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak has been placing Canada flags on lawns in Camrose to celebrate Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day for many years. The flags provide a colourful display and many residents enjoy seeing the flags as they travel throughout the city. You can see some of the over 200 flags we deploy in our 2020 Community Flags Photo Album on this site.

For only $60 you can subscribe to have a flag placed on a friend’s or family member’s lawn in Camrose for the 2024 holidays. We will acknowledge your gift and send a note you can provide to your friend or family member explaining the gift.

Proceeds from the Canada Flag subscriptions provide funding to the Camrose Air Cadets and other youth initiatives in the area.

Robyn Gray's Legacy

In memory and in honour of the work Camrose Public Library's past director Robyn Gray did to maintain the vital service CPL provides and contributes to the community, the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak has set up memorial donations to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Camrose affiliate.

"Robyn’s passion for literacy through reading led us to direct donations to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Camrose affiliate," noted Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak member Morris Henderson. "It is heartwarming to see the amazing effect of Robyn’s short life on those who met her, but sad to see that life cut short."

Children are eligible to receive a free, age-appropriate book monthly from birth until they reach the age of five. Children that are registered when they are born, could potentially build a library of 60 books by the time they graduate from the program. "The Rotary Club of Camrose has partnered with the Camrose Public Library to offer this program to children in Camrose. Parents can register children in person through the library or by downloading an application from https://imaginationlibrary.com/ca/affiliate/ABCAMROSE/ and mailing it to the Rotary Club of Camrose".

"With Robyn's passing, her parents asked the Daybreak Rotary Club where memorial donations to Robyn would have the best effect," noted Henderson. "With Robyn's passion for reading and literacy the Imagination Library was a no-brainer to suggest. Ann and Gord (Robyn's parents) enthusiastically accepted our suggestion."

Robyn passed away in Calgary on January 29, at the age of 31 years, after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer.

She joined the team at Camrose Public Library as the director in January of 2019. Unfortunately, she was forced to take long-term disability leave in the spring of 2021.

During her time with CPL and in the community, Robyn came to be known for her warm and welcoming manner, her passion to keep people reading, her dedication to the continued growth of CPL (despite the challenges faced due to the pandemic) and her participation and support throughout the community including as an active member of the Daybreak Rotary Club.

Robyn will be sorrowfully missed.

"We chose units of $50 because that is the cost to provide a book-a-month for a year to a Camrose child registered in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library," said Henderson adding that all donations and condolence messages will be shared with Robyn’s parents, Ann and Gord.

"There are donations from teachers, bandmates, workmates, friends (some representing groups) that have been touched by Robyn's spirit."

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

The Rotary Club of Camrose has partnered with the Camrose Public Library to offer the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Camrose families.

The program sends new, quality books to young children, newborn to 5-years-old, once a month. The books are mailed, addressed to the child, so the children can look forward to watching for their arrival, and understand that the books are theirs. Children enrolled in the program at birth receive at total of 60 books.

Highlights of a slideshow the club prepared describes the program. Some excerpts:

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library was created in 1995, and while it started in a local county in Tennessee, it has now grown throughout the US, Canada and the UK.
The program currently sends out over 1.5 million, high-quality books every month, and since the start of the program has delivered over 167 million books.
In Canada, there are 300 community partnerships in 10 provinces and three territories.
The books are paid for by the local partner (Rotary Club of Camrose), while the Dolly Parton Foundation pays for all the overhead, employee salaries, etc.
All local funding goes toward the books and delivery.

By providing books to children, the child's interest in reading is increased, parents read more to their children, and the children are better prepared for school.
The books being delivered directly to the child at their home creates an "event" that the children look forward to. It also promotes sharing and interaction and helps to promote a connection between the child and the caregiver(s) other family members and siblings, strengthening the home environment.
Books are high quality, age-specific and selected by a committee of specialists. In 2020, 42 of 60 books offered were Canadian titles.
Local partners, like the Rotary Club of Camrose, are responsible for raising funds to support the program. While the program should be open to everyone regardless of income class, the sponsoring club can place limits on the number of participants. It is possible to start a pilot program. The Camrose program has no restrictions but is limiting the program at 100 children enrolled.
Information collected about the child (Name, Address and Birth date) is stored in a secure database provided by the Dolly Parton Foundation.

Disc Golf Update

The 9-hole family friendly disc golf course in Jubilee Park offers two levels of play, beginners and those wanting more challenge. The course is available for free play, just bring your own disc. A great selection of discs are available for purchase at Sport Excellence.

The UDisc app for iPhone and Android is available as a free download. You can see the layout, record your score, find other disc golf courses as you travel and more.

The baskets are all in, tee box locations are marked and sign posts are installed. Concrete will soon be poured for the tee boxes and sign design is underway. Email CamroseDaybreak@gmail.com for more information.
