Happy Bucks
:

Happy Bucks this week included the beginning of the Hospice society at St. Mary’s Hospital, the 2nd birthday of grandson, surviving Friday as IT consultant for father, another Rotarian’s daughter starting part time with a Rotarian’s firm, our judge for the day was looking particularly good this morning, multiple missed meetings, University municipal gathering, a trip to Vegas, enough basketball in February to keep a Rotarian happy and busy, AUC-student association fundraisers for Reading University, 10 hours spent at the Michener Allen Auction to buy the intended car plus two more, visit with grandchildren, passed but was not involved in a major accident, the Kidney Foundation is honoring Ken and Rita Nyback.

Judge:

Pat combined some history about herself with her judging duties. Pat recently retired after 45 years working in the physiotherapy field. Pat has 2 sons and 4 grandsons which pretty much make up her retirement….sorry Harry, but you didn’t make the list ;)

Pat used her retirement as a link to an article in the previous Rotarian magazine. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar talked about retirement and laid out three rule. Pat quizzed the club on these rules….to a dismal failure. I’m pretty sure there were mumblings about reading the articles a little closer (or at all) in the future….maybe after retirement right Anna? Pat was kind enough to enlighten us to these three rules:

1.     Don’t think of it as retirement. Consider it a change not an end.

2.     Go from being a success to being significant.

3.     People who need people are the luckiest people.

50-50 Draw:

Destiny was 9 spades off in her hunt for the ace. The deck is getting pretty thin and Joy swears the ace is there somewhere.

Speaker
:

Today we had the pleasure of two members of the Augustana campus chaplaincy program (Erin and Ryan) share some of their events and roles within the University and the community. There are currently 6 student chaplains at the Augustana campus and they are recognized as one of the top three major groups on campus along with student council and residence life. The program is funded 2/3rds by the U of A and 1/3rd by the Chaplaincy Council. Their mandate is to serve students of all faith backgrounds.

This program provides worship on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week during the 10:00-10:30am time block. There are very few classes scheduled at this time thus allowing many students the option to attend worship. They are also working with Les Parsons to provide one evening worship a week to athletes and other students who may not be able to attend during the mornings.

One of the major services put on by the student chaplaincy is the Tuesday night soup supper. This is sponsored by the U of A senators and hosts approximately 10% of the student body and is also open to the public. Soup is donated by the Norseman Inn and bread, cheese and water are also available. For more information and a peek into these suppers there is a short video posted on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsplWYs0aS0 or search Augustana soup supper.

There is also a very large focus on community building, both among the university community as well as Camrose and surrounding area. Some of the university based events include “bigger or better”, coffee and open mike night, mini-golf, skating, and other fun activities. The program also promotes service outside of the university by participating in hospital visits, card making, rake and runs as well as Augustana Sundays which means being welcomed by other churches in Camrose and area to participate in worship and a soup supper.

The campus chaplaincy program also organizes and holds fundraisers such as SCORE (in support of Sakaharini) and the Grateful Grannies cookie sale which is being held on campus on Valentine’s Day from 9am-2pm.

One important part of this program is the Winter Retreat for the student chaplains. This is a great opportunity for the students to come together and celebrate their faith and friendship. A fair trade local made sale is held each year as the major fundraiser for this event.

There will be a “What’s Cooking” event on March 2nd. This is described as a fancy soup supper and is a deal at $10 a person.

In appreciation for Erin and Ryan coming to speak to us this morning, Caroline presented them with an Operation Eyesight certificate supporting cataract surgery.
