Meeting Notes

REGULAR MEETING: June 16, 2026

Meeting Chair: Destiny Reay

Our meeting opened with a welcome to the members and guests present, and introduction of guests: Margaret Lee-Shold (Tina’s Grandmother), Elizabeth Morton, Arlene Morton, Simone Doucet, Dan Doucet, Louisa Land.

We continued with the singing of O Canada, Rotary Grace and the Treaty 6 recognition followed by dinner. We enjoyed Chili (with cheese!) and souvlaki pork and chicken skewers prepared by Lou, homemade buns from Ken Rohr’s kitchen and a variety of salads and desserts brought by our members.

Birthday greetings: We missed birthday greetings in May so we say Happy Birthday to Larry Johnson, the only May birthday in our Club.  In June we celebrate Jeannie Zimmel, Destiny Reay, Rob Rolf, Don Rebus and Dawn Anderson. Looking ahead to July, our birthday boys are Ken Roberts and Dan Olofson. Happy Birthday to all!

After a dinner break, the meeting resumed.

Announcements/Updates:

  • Martha’s Table Wednesdays in July – Shirley B had all the shifts filled but has had 2 people cancel for July 11. If you can come on that day please let Shirley know asap.

  • Save the Date for our upcoming Pedal Pub fundraising event on Friday and Saturday, October 2/3, 2026. We will need a few more helpers to cover two days this time. We welcome anyone who would like to be involved in planning or volunteering at this event. Most importantly, we are looking for 9 sponsors who will contribute $500 each to pay for the rental of the Pedal Pub and staff for 2 days. Please reach out to a business or individual who would support Rotary with a cash donation. If you ask someone there is a 50% chance, they will say no (or yes), but if you don’t ask, there is a 100% certainty they will not help. Perhaps your accountant, doctor, dentist, financial planner, mechanic, etc

  • July & August meetings: no regular meetings scheduled. Social gatherings will be held on July 7 & 21, and August 11 & 25. Two will be hosted by Rotarians at their homes and 2 hosted by Rotarians at the Rotary Pavilion. Let Lou know if you would like to host one.

Scholarship Presentation:

President Destiny presented $1,000 Robyn Gray Memorial Scholarships to Simone Doucet and Luisa Land.

Simone thanked Rotary. “It’s an honour. I’m aligned with Rotary values”. She reflected on her youth exchange in France and is aiming to be a doctor someday and specifically wishes to be a part of Doctors Without Borders. Simone is volunteering this fall at St. Mary’s Hospital as a medical assistant.

Luisa introduced herself to the Rotarians and guests in attendance. She’s graduating this year and is looking into environmental law and is passionate about climate change. She has been involved in various leadership roles including Student’s Council. “I’m honoured to be here. Thank you!”.

RYLE Camp report from Elizabeth Morton. Elizabeth shared that there was a high emphasis on mental health at this year’s camp, along with a strong music connection. They adapted the ABBA song, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, to an economic development theme they were working on. She thanked Rotary for the experience and learned all about leadership.

Youth Exchange Update - Kevin Smook gave a brief update on behalf of Jackie Millington. There is a parent/student meeting set for September 10th at 7PM at the High School. We are in need of inbound and outbound counsellors to make this work. Please contact Jackie or Kevin.
