Canadian Arctic Holidays

I, Cliff Drever, lined up Richard Weber to give a presentation to our club on what is going on in the Arctic as per climate and tourism today. You may remember he and his wife presented to our club several years ago about their expeditions to the North and South pole. Richard has been to the North Pole more than any person and holds the record with a Russian man for the only non-supported trip to the pole and back. Josse Weber led an expedition to the South Pole with a group of women. They along with two sons operate Arctic Watch on Summerset Island (my son Lee worked for them up there for two seasons as a teenager).

2016--Richard receives the order of Canada medal from Governor General David Johnston

Arctic Watch founder Richard Weber recently received The Order of Canada from the Canadian Govenor General. Held at the Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Ontario, 42 recipients were chosen by the Canadian Government in distinguishment of their exploits. Richard was nominated for his pioneering acts of polar exploration and for his efforts to increase awareness of environmental threats to the North. Richard has spent more than 30 years in the polar regions!

The Gathering of the Clans

Flagstaff Scottish Club

The Flagstaff Scottish Club is a dynamic group of volunteers who promote Scottish traditions, customs, and values in the Flagstaff and Battle River Region. They aim to continue and enrich the Scottish culture through various events, volunteer opportunities, and sales of Scottish merchandise.

Their annual events consist of a Robbie Burns Dinner and Dance, Highland Fling - Celebrating Tartan Day, and the Gathering of the Clans Highland Festival. In addition, they provide services such as designated driving, bartending and security. 3 years ago, they started the Battle River Pipes and Drums band, comprising of around 20 band members from the Flagstaff area, Lloydminster, Wainwright, Camrose, Coronation, and everywhere in between. The band meets on a weekly basis to practice and they perform at various parades, birthdays, and special events.

In Spring 2020, the band also hosted a Quarantine Tour where they visited 16 communities to bring a spark of joy to the local senior homes and hospitals during a time of isolation.

Karli Grove

Karli Grove is the Media Manager and Treasurer for the Flagstaff Scottish Club, in addition to being a tenor drummer in the band. She has been with the club since August 2018 and considers them to be another family. Karli has played a critical role in marketing the Flagstaff Scottish Club, from making the posters, to designing the website, to creating the logo and branding.

She is an active community member in the Flagstaff area. She volunteers on numerous other boards, such as the Lougheed Library Board and the Hardisty Lake United Church Camp board. She is also the Lougheed Field House Coordinator, with big plans to turn the facility into a strong community-based centre.

All of this is on top of her full-time job as an Insurance Broker with The James Insurance Group. She has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta with a major in Strategic Management and Organization, and a minor in Accounting. She has a love for culture, human behaviour, spirituality, and everything in between that encourages her to look through a new lens. Her career plan is to help businesses transform themselves from 'good to better', starting with the Flagstaff Scottish Club, the Lougheed Field House, and her other community groups.
